How to improve your English skills
My most important piece of advice is: "Do something (anything). If you don't do anything, you won't get anywhere. Make it your hobby, not a chore, but above all have fun!"
Don't be in too much of a hurry. You're setting off on a long journey and there'll be delays and frustrations along the way. Sometimes you'll be in the fast lane and other times you'll be stuck in traffic, but there will also be lots of interesting things and interesting people along the way. Take your time to really enjoy the experience.
There are many ways to improve your level of English, but only you can find the right way for you. Here are a few tips that might help
Improve your Learning Skills
Learning is a skill and it can be improved.
Your path to learning effectively is through knowing
- yourself
- your capacity to learn
- processes you have successfully used in the past
- your interest, and knowledge of what you wish to learn
Motivate yourself
If you are not motivated to learn English you will become frustrated and give up. Ask yourself the following questions, and be honest:-
- Why do you need to learn/improve English?
- Where will you need to use English?
- What skills do you need to learn/improve? (Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking)
- How soon do you need to see results?
- How much time can you afford to devote to learning English.
- How much money can you afford to devote to learning English.
- Do you have a plan or learning strategy?
Set yourself achievable goals
You know how much time you can dedicate to learning English, but a short time each day will produce better, longer-term results than a full day on the weekend and then nothing for two weeks.
Joining a short intensive course could produce better results than joining a course that takes place once a week for six months.
Here are some goals you could set yourself:-
- Join an English course (and attend regularly).
- Do your homework.
- Read a book a month.
- Learn a new word every day.
- Visit an English speaking forum every day.
- Read a news article on the net every day.
- Do 10 minutes listening practice every day.
- Watch an English film at least once a month.
- Follow a soap, comedy or radio or TV drama.
A good way to meet your goals is to establish a system of rewards and punishments.
Decide on a reward you will give yourself for fulfilling your goals for a month.
- A bottle of your favourite drink
- A meal out / or a nice meal at home
- A new outfit
- A manicure or massage
Understanding how you learn best may also help you.
There are different ways to learn. Find out what kind of learner you are in order to better understand how to learn more effectively..
Reflection for the different approaches
Reflection for the different approaches
As a teacher student, i’m breathy writing my own idea understanding for the different approaches. The one, which i’m extremely enjoying is communicative approach. Although, i hadn’t known it yet, i still had idea like this since the beginning of the learning second language. But i didn’t say that the other approaches like humanistic , learner centered approach, functional approaches , inductive and didactive approaches are not good. As a reader, i want to choose some ideas from the different approaches and make complex one for my teaching career. For instance;
1. to learn the rules and structures of a new language is through experience, practice and observation. It enables the students to practice without explanation of grammatical rules.
2. Detective approaches gets rules and models. It is assumed that the learners will be able to construct the sentence types or structures from rules and models.
3. functional approach is known as functional approach and it focuses on common communicative functions like ‘’how to greet someone, how to ask for directions etc..
4. communicative approach aims primarly to enable the learner to become competent in the processes of communication. The communicative approach stresses the importance of using language appropriately in social context. It is also focused on placing the learner in situations where real information is needed.
5. in humanistic approach, teachers pay serious attention to the reducing stress. Becoming teacher, i would use some ideas from the approaches as passive as appropriate as i could. Furthermore, i should think of in what situation i can use communicative approach, how often i’m engaged in teacher centered approach and so on. Modernly , there is a learner centered approach that is different from teacher centered classroom such as;
- learners are more active and participate more;
-learners are encouraged to develop their learning skills and efficient learning strategies etc..

- Who me?
- Yes , you!
- couldn't be
- Then who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
Total physical response
Definition
TPR is an approach to teaching second language based on learning linked to physical actions which are designed to reinforce comprehention of particular basic items.
Introduction
Dr. James J.Asher developed for first time the Total Physical Response approach. He wondered why so many people had problems learning a second language.
Why
The answer is related to the methodology used and the stress produced by the process of learning second language.
The solution
Creation of a stress-free approach in first language environment which was similar to first language learning
Myths
- for beginning students
- native like pronunciation
- not only limited to imperative
- tenses - available to teach all the tenses other grammatical features
- vocabulary of all stages
TPR characteristics

- facilitator
- instant understanding of the TL
- long term - retention
- stress free
Activities

Fantastic 4 (Team introduction)
Our group consist of 4 members: a boy, three girls. Our group's most specific feature that distinguish from other group is that members make their contribution to making decision without making one person shoulder all the loads of the team. Also we respect each other well. Our group's primary aim is to not only perform the task that teacher gave but also to study the skill of group work that has been one of the vital requirements of job today.
